WHAT IS A SECURE CARD?
A secured credit card is a type of credit card backed by a cash deposit you make as collateral. The deposit acts as security for the credit issuer, and your credit limit is typically determined by the amount of the deposit, along with factors such as your income and ability to repay.
ARE CREDIT BUREAUS OBLIGATED TO RESPOND TO A DISPUTE?
In accordance with the Federal Trade Commission, credit bureaus are mandated to investigate disputed information, generally within a 30-day period, unless the dispute is deemed frivolous. The bureau must forward all pertinent information related to the dispute to the entity that originally provided the information. This entity is then required to conduct its own investigation and report the findings back to the credit bureau. If the information is found to be inaccurate, the originating company must notify all three credit bureaus to update the relevant details in your credit file.
SECURE CARD CREDIT LIMIT
Your credit limit is typically a percentage of your security deposit, though it may also match the deposit amount. In many cases, banks place the deposit into an interest-bearing savings account, where it remains until you close the account, upgrade to an unsecured credit card, or default on your balance.
WHAT IS PIGGYBACKING?
Piggybacking, also referred to as being an authorized user, involves an individual being granted permission to use a credit card by the primary cardholder. The primary cardholder remains responsible for all debt on the card, regardless of who incurs the charges. Piggybacking can be an effective strategy for building credit when used properly. The key to success with this method is to make timely payments and maintain a balance that does not exceed 30% of the available credit limit. For example, if your credit limit is $1,000, it’s important to keep your balance below $300. This demonstrates to lenders that you can manage credit responsibly without overextending your finances.
SECURE CARDS HAVE FEES?
Secured credit cards generally carry higher fees than unsecured credit cards. These may include an annual fee, an application fee, and in some cases, monthly maintenance fees or charges for credit limit increases.
